Lefthandedness is not a curse
Isebell Gauche Copyright 2010©

Although parents may sometimes experience lefthandedness as a curse or a dissability because of problems experienced by their children in school, it is indeed the opposite, provided the teacher understands handedness.

The biggest problem regarding handedness is that people tend to reduce it to the hand that you use to write with. Nothing can be further from the truth. Handedness is only part of it. The origin of lefthandedness is in the brain and thus is the true issue not the hand that you use to write with, but the part of the brain that is dominant.

The way of thinking is only a problem in the school system because schools don't accommodate lefthandedness. The mostly right brain orientated left hander simply doesn't fit into the system created for right handers - and thus mainly left brain dominant people.

Unfortunately there are people that resist change, and you should not even try to take on the system, unless you are prepared for the fight of your life. The educational authorities are not keen on admitting their way of doing things are not working for all. It is however, your responsibility as parent to make the teachers aware of the fact that lefthandedness is more than just the hand that your child write with. You have to defend your child and protect your child against victimisation and ignorance often displayed on the part of teachers who are not willing to make room for left handers in their education world.

Lefthandedness is a problem for the educational system. Work books have been designed to make writing, turning pages, and learning as easy as possible for the majority of learners, which of course, are the right handed pupils. The same courtesy however, has not been extended to lefthanded learners. The lefthander must develop ways to write in the work books without smudging their work. Since the writing is directly beneath the hand, the lefthanded learner cannot see their writing. As such many mistakes are made, the child writes slower, doesn't finish in time, and has to rely on memory. Apart from the above, the hand writing is then also less readable.

All of the above leads to conflict within the classroom. The teacher complains about the slow and not so neat work instead of providing the child with the best means for writing and giving more time. Many teachers pressure the lefthanded learner to write faster and then contact the parents about the lack of neatness shown in the work.

The solutions to the above and more problems which the lefthanded learners face in the school are discussed in the book "Right to be Left" which is available in Afrikaans only, at the moment. It is an e-book that can be ordered right here and received within the hour. If you prefer to wait for the English version, but will appreciate it if your notified once it is published in electronic format, you can email us.
