Help for the Left Handed Pupil
Isebell Gauche 2008©

Tips for the teacher to help the left handed pupil:

When asked to draw a picture situated on the left side of a column or page (when the child is expected to draw it in the right column), the lefthanded child faces certain difficulties:

1) Picture cannot be seen as the arm or hand cover it
2) The child is forced to turn his head several times to view the picture and then has to re-focus on the space where he has to draw. He will thus work slower, make more mistakes and has to rely on his memory.

Solution:

Try to place the picture on the right of the space where the child is to draw. This gives him an equal chance to perform. See below.

The child will struggle to draw the picture in this space. The reason - the picture is hidden under the hand.
Place the picture on the right side of the space where you want the child to draw as this will make it easier for the left handed pupil to see the picture. If the child can see the picture, he/she will not have to work on memory.

The book on the right to be left, available in Afrikaans "Reg om Links te Wees" provides numerous tips to help the left handed pupil in school.
